The Heart of Public Health: Community Care, HIV Advocacy & Human Connection
What does it mean to truly listen to your body? In this heartfelt and powerful episode of All Docs on Deck, Dr. Karen Gordon-Boyle joins Dr. Khnuma Simmonds and Dr. Sherlonda Adkins for a meaningful conversation about mental health, burnout, friendship, advocacy, authenticity, and the sacred role that home and community play in our well-being. As a Public Health professional, educator, researcher, and advocate from Guyana, this girlfriend doctor brings a unique perspective shaped by years of working with individuals living with HIV, supporting underserved communities, and witnessing firsthand the impact that social connection, safe spaces, and compassionate care have on health outcomes. Together, we explore what it means to listen to our bodies before they force us to slow down, why women often ignore their own needs while caring for everyone else, and how friendship circles can become lifelines during life's most difficult seasons. Dr. Karen shares powerful reflections on working with vulnerable populations, advocating for survivors of domestic violence and people living with HIV, and the lessons she learned serving communities where resilience was often born from hardship. We also discuss the sacredness of home not simply as a physical structure, but as a place of emotional safety, restoration, belonging, and healing. For many women, creating a peaceful home environment is a critical component of protecting mental health and nurturing wellness. This conversation is a reminder that our bodies speak to us long before burnout arrives, that healing often happens in community, and that strong women survive and thrive through meaningful relationships with other women. Because when we learn to listen to ourselves, we create space for healing, purpose, and joy. In This Episode, We Discuss: • The importance of listening to your body and honoring its signals • Mental health, burnout, and recognizing when it's time to pause • The healing power of friendship circles and community • Working with communities impacted by HIV/AIDS • Advocating for survivors of domestic violence and vulnerable populations • Lessons learned serving depressed and underserved communities in Guyana • The connection between public health and mental well-being • Boundaries, balance, rest, and sustainable caregiving ✨ Reflection Questions • What is your body trying to tell you right now? • Have you been honoring your need for rest, or pushing through exhaustion? • What helps you decompress when life becomes overwhelming? • Who are the women you can safely be yourself with? • Does your home environment support your peace and well-being? • Where might stronger boundaries create more balance in your life? • How can friendship become part of your wellness strategy? • What does feeling emotionally safe look like for you? 💡 Takeaways • Your body often knows what you need before your mind acknowledges it. • Rest and recovery are essential components of wellness. • Strong sister relationships are powerful protective factors for mental health. • Advocacy begins with compassion and the willingness to see people's humanity. • Safe spaces allow women to show up authentically and heal. • Home can be a sanctuary that nurtures emotional and mental well-being. • Public health is deeply connected to relationships, community, and quality of life. • Women do not have to carry life's challenges alone. • Listening to your body is an act of self-respect. • Healing happens in community. Dr. Karen brings wisdom, humility, and lived experience to this conversation. Her message reminds us that wellness is not only about what we do - it is also about how we listen, who we surround ourselves with, and the spaces we create for healing. Pour From A Full Cup: Why Women Deserve Rest, Boundaries, and Joy.
What does it mean to truly pour from a full cup? In this empowering and heartfelt episode of All Docs on Deck, Dr. Christi Culpepper-Walker (Dr. CC) joins Dr. Khnuma Simmonds and Dr. Sherlonda Adkins for an honest conversation about authenticity, mental health, boundaries, relationships, friendship, and the courage to show up fully as yourself. As a Clinical Psychologist, Mindset Coach, Speaker Coach, and Founder of Heart & Soul Mental Health, Dr. CC has dedicated her life to helping individuals become happy, healthy, and whole. Through her work and her personal journey, she has learned that thriving requires more than achievement - it requires rest, support, self-awareness, and the willingness to honor your own needs. Together, we explore why so many women have been conditioned to pour from empty cups, why boundaries are essential rather than selfish, and how authenticity creates space for deeper joy, healthier relationships, and greater purpose. Dr. CC shares her powerful insights on mindset, healing, sisterhood, therapy, and the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people as you move from surviving to thriving. This conversation is a reminder that no woman is meant to do life alone. We all deserve support. We all deserve rest. Healing Wounds & Honoring Heritage: Honoring the Past. Healing the Present. Transforming the Future.
Every Little Girl Has a Story What if the wounds we carry are not the end of our story but the beginning of our purpose? In this deeply personal and transformative episode of All Docs on Deck, Dr. Dee joins Dr. Khnuma Simmonds and Dr. Sherlonda Adkins for an honest conversation about heritage, healing, spirituality, identity, and the power of rewriting the stories we inherit. Drawing from her experiences of adoption, growing up in the Dominican Republic, surviving domestic violence, and navigating life's many transitions, Dr. Dee shares how healing became the bridge between pain and purpose. Her story is a powerful reminder that every little girl has a story and every woman has the opportunity to honor that story, heal from it, and transform it into something meaningful. Together, we explore the complexities of culture, the contradictions of sisterhood, the role of spirituality in understanding our life's assignment, and the courage required to become who we were always meant to be. This conversation challenges us to consider how our personal healing impacts our families, our communities, and the legacy we leave behind. We also dive into what it means to redefine wealth, retirement, and success as women of color, moving beyond survival and into intentional living, freedom, joy, and abundance. Through powerful storytelling and reflection, Dr. Dee reminds us that dreaming is not childish - it is sacred. It is often the first step toward creating the life we deserve. This episode is for every woman who has ever questioned her worth, wrestled with her past, searched for purpose, or wondered if healing was possible. Because every little girl has a story. And every woman has the power to decide how that story continues. In this episode, we discuss: • Dr. Dee's journey of adoption and identity • Growing up in the Dominican Republic and the influence of culture and heritage • Surviving domestic violence and transforming pain into purpose • The role of spirituality in healing and understanding our life's assignment • Redefining sisterhood and acknowledging its beauty and contradictions • Healing ourselves as a pathway to healing our communities • Honoring the stories we inherit while creating new ones • Reimagining wealth, retirement, and legacy for people of color • The power of dreaming beyond limitations and expectations • Creating impact from the inside out • Turning wounds into wisdom and experiences into service ✨ Reflection Questions • What story did the little girl inside of you learn about herself? • Which parts of your heritage have shaped who you are today? • How has spirituality guided you through seasons of uncertainty, grief, or healing? • What wounds have become sources of wisdom and purpose in your life? • If you fully honored your story, what would you do differently? • What legacy are you creating for the generations that follow? 💡 Takeaways • Every little girl has a story worth honoring. • Healing does not erase our past - it helps us understand it. • Heritage can be both a source of strength and a pathway to deeper self-discovery. • Spirituality often provides the compass that guides us toward purpose. • Our greatest wounds can become our greatest sources of wisdom. • True wealth includes identity, peace, purpose, freedom, and legacy. • Healing ourselves is one of the most powerful ways we heal our families and communities. • Transformation begins when we stop hiding our story and start honoring it. Dr. Dee brings wisdom, vulnerability, and profound insight to this conversation. Her journey reminds us that healing is not about perfection—it is about courage, truth, faith, and the willingness to become who we were created to be. Keep Your Fire Burning 🔥 | A Message for the Girl Ignite Your Fire Summit!
This message was originally recorded for a group of young women attending the Girl Ignite Your Fire Summit in the U.S. Virgin Islands. After sharing it with a few girlfriends, they encouraged me to make it public because the message extends far beyond one event. It's for every young person who has ever wondered if their dreams are too big for where they come from. I grew up on an island of just 84 square miles. While I am deeply grateful for my roots, I always knew there was more to discover, more to experience, and more that I was capable of becoming. Today, I have had the privilege of building businesses, traveling the world, creating community, supporting survivors, helping entrepreneurs grow, and leading a global movement centered on love, friendship, wellness, and liberation. But before any of that happened, I was simply a young girl with big dreams. In this video, I share the lessons I wish someone had told me sooner about purpose, friendship, money, courage, education, and believing that your future can be bigger than your circumstances. Whether you are growing up in the U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands a rural community, a small town, or anywhere in the world, I hope this message reminds you that where you start does not determine where you can go. ✨ Dream boldly. ✨ Stay curious. ✨ Invest in yourself. ✨ Choose your friendships wisely. ✨ Never let geography determine your destiny. With love, Your Girlfriend, Dr. K Founder & SHE-EO, Girlfriendism International™ #VirginIslands #GirlsIgniteYourFire #GirlLeadership #YouthEmpowerment #WomenWhoLead #DreamBig #Girlfriendism #LoveAndLiberation #CaribbeanWomen #FutureLeaders
