As the dust settles from the recent elections, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment in our history. With barely a handful of women elected to the senate in the U.S. Virgin Islands and a Republican-dominated, predominantly white, male administration in the White House...what better time is there than now to reflect on what it means to be a girlfriend?
This moment serves as a clear reminder that the philosophy of Girlfriendism is more essential than ever so let's not be discouraged but remain inspired and steadfast! We must continue to rewrite the narratives about women and embrace our ‘ism’ - one rooted in friendship, acceptance, emotional intelligence, and above all: LOVE.
Redefining ‘Isms’
Isms and -Phobias are discriminatory (and often hostile) beliefs and behaviors based in stereotypes, fear and ignorance (Ohio State). These terms - racism, colorism, sexism, classism, elitism and so on - carry a negative weight, representing oppressive ideologies and behaviors that fragment our communities, fueling systemic injustices.
Girlfriendism flips this narrative. It offers a refreshing alternative—a philosophy and lifestyle that uplifts and celebrates diversity, inclusivity, connection, belonging and empowerment. By connecting with one another, we can challenge toxic norms and create an environment that supports women as leaders. For instance, research shows that companies with more women in leadership roles enjoy a 21% higher likelihood of outperforming their competitors in profitability (Oxford Leadership, 2024). This statistic illustrates the transformational power of collective action and is one of the reasons that Girlfriendism centers women's wellness in our movement and supports programs like ROI: The Millionaire Summit beyond it.
A Call to Action
Let today mark the start of a passionate commitment: one where we carry the spirit of Girlfriendism into our everyday lives. As we navigate our complex experiences, and process the emotions from this political season, let love and acceptance resonate in every interaction.
We have a responsibility (and the ability!) to challenge the societal norms that foster fear and misunderstanding. Cultivating a culture grounded in emotional intelligence will lead to positive change and acts of support for one another will embody the essence of Girlfriendism.
This journey is not just personal; it’s a collective effort. Supporting fellow women, uplifting each other, and engaging in meaningful experiences can greatly impact our lives, our friendships and our communities. In the words of Rachel Rogers: We are the saviors we are waiting for.
A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, let’s maintain a clear vision: a world where women are not only participants but leaders and decision-makers—an ecosystem that amplifies our voices and values our contributions.
We must remember that we are creating a legacy for future generations of girls and women. By building an environment of empowerment, we ensure that they feel confident and supported in their dreams. In the U.S., women hold only about 27% of key leadership positions (American Progress, 2018), a statistic that highlights the need for our efforts in pushing for change that captures our voices and our experiences.
Embracing Our Togetherness
I encourage you, girlfriends, to face each day with renewed purpose and a heart full of love. While challenges will continue to arise, our strength lies in unity. Accept one another’s differences, celebrate the empowerment that emerges from love and support women in their endeavors because we belong here.
Let Girlfriendism be your guide and let me express my gratitude to every woman in our Girlfriendism family - your unwavering commitment to uplifting women makes this movement powerful!
As girlfriends, we can nurture a world where our shared values and aspirations lead to a brighter future for all women - in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Caribbean, the United States of America and across the globe!
Always in LOVE,
Your Girlfriend, Dr. K 💕
